The Houston area has numerous possibilities for photo shoot locations. I see this time and time again as I’m out-and-about in the community showing homes and conducting real estate business. Whether you are a photography buff with a new camera or you are searching for a unique outdoor setting for a photo shoot for a group, a couple, or an individual.

Professional photographers understand having a beautiful and distinctive background can make-or-break a photograph. You owe it to yourself to give your photos a creative boost by choosing one of these outstanding locations when you want something unique and different.

Where to Have Your Next Photo Shoot

The Houston Skyline

Some of the most popular spots to take photos of the skyline include: Sabine Street Bridge, Eleanor Tinsley Park, and St. Joe’s parking garage (near St. Joseph Parkway and Caroline). Vary the times of day with some night photos or early morning when the traffic is lighter.

Former Paul Barabush Market, 400 Teetshorn St., Houston

Looking for a unique wall of faded painted signs and architectural design? Then you must visit the faded ghost signs of this marketplace. You’ll be adding a touch of Houston history to your photo with this backdrop.

A Field of Texas Bluebonnets

Part of being a Texan is having at least one photo taken in a field of bluebonnets. But these state flowers aren’t found everywhere across the state. We’re lucky enough to live near the triangle of where the flowers thrive — Houston, San Antonio, and the Dallas/Forth Worth metroplex. The blueblonnets bloom in the spring typically from mid-March through mid-April.

The Biscuit Paint Wall, 1435 Westheimer along the side of Biscuit Paint

You’ll find a bold and bright paint drip mural painted on the side of the Biscuit Paint building. The artist, Mr. D (Eyeful Art), has created a local photographer and tourist destination spot which is truly one-of-a-kind.

The “We Love Houston” Sign, 1816 Thompson St., Houston

At an impressive 28-feet tall this three-dimensional sign declares community love for Houston. It’s a natural choice to add local flavor as a photo backdrop. This iconic sculpture sports each letter in a rainbow color.

Art Blocks Project, Planters & Stems, 1001 Main St., Houston

The Art Block Project is a temporary public art installation exhibit happening all around Houston. The Planters & Stems exhibit on Main Street is a whimsical maze-like sculpture by local artist Floyd Newsum. To locate more exhibits, visit the website at https://www.downtownhouston.org/art-blocks.

Houston Graffiti Building, 1503 Chartres St., Houston

Here you will find word art and graffiti full of color and graphics to give any photographer numerous crazy photo options.

James Turrell’s “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace, Rice University, Suzanne Deal Booth Centennial Pavilion (West Quadrangle), 6100 Main St., Houston

One of Houston’s most iconic public artworks is located on the campus of Rice University. At sunrise and sunset LED lighting in this architectural wonder casts a slowly-changing spectrum of light against the pure white ceiling of the Skyspace in the upper viewing area of the structure. The play of colored light makes a fascinating backdrop for photos.

Smither Park, 2441 Munger St., Houston

Reclaimed and recycled materials are used to make stunning mosaic art throughout the park. Numerous photos have been taken in this eco-friendly park. Give it a visit for your next photo shoot.

Buffalo Bayou Park, along Memorial Drive, just west of Downtown Houston

With 160-acres of park to explore the settings for a photo shoot are bountiful from the beautifully manicured gardens to the native landscaping. The park includes paddle boats, a dog park, and public art displays.

Sam Houston Park, Downtown Houston at 100 Bagby

This 10-acre park has been described as a Victorian wonderland, with footpaths laid out to pass by an old mill and cross a rustic bridge over a pleasant stream.

Discovery Green, across the street from George R. Brown Convention Center, 1500 McKinney St., Houston

Looking for bold and imaginative to add to your photo backgrounds or as a frame for shooting through? This park is your place. Visit Discovery Green’s Kinder Lake while The Shape of Things: Michael Craig-Martin exhibition of bold line shapes is on display. The sculptural shapes, measuring 8–12 ft. high, are on display through Nov. 3, 2019. Will you choose the shoe, lightbulb, or teacup to be part of your photos?

Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park, 2800 Post Oak Blvd., Houston

The highlight of this photo spot is the 64-foot semi-circular architectural fountain. 11,000 gallons of water per minute cascades down the waterwall structure’s inner and outer walls. This is also a romantic setting for engagement proposals and photos of the happy moment.

Japanese Garden, 6000 Fannin St., Houston

Cultural influences and exquisite landscaping are throughout the gardens with so many places to pose groups or individuals. Your photographer’s heart will beat faster as you decide where to begin first. The garden includes a tea house, plants, ponds, and rock formations.
