• In 1890 Missouri City’s name, more than 120 years old, got its start from an advertising campaign when real estate investors R.M. Cash and L.E. Luckel purchased 4 square miles with the intention of subdividing the lots and selling these as homesteads. The advertising efforts focused heavily on attracting residents from St. Louis, Missouri to relocate to Texas.
• Missouri City is unique because it’s situated in two counties. The majority of the city 29.8 square mile city is in Fort Bend County with a smaller portion in Harris County.
• Missouri City is served by two public school districts. Based on the location of each school the facility may be served by either Fort Bend Independent School District or Houston Independent School District.
• Missouri City has the first recreational opportunity of its kind in Texas with being the home of the Edible Arbor Trail. This 2.3-mile trail connects schools, residential, and commercial areas through the center of the city. On the walking trail you can eat fresh fruits and nuts along the trail.
• Since 1996 postal mailing addresses have been unique to a location. Some places in Missouri City have a Houston postal mailing address while various places in the city of Houston have a Missouri City postal mailing address.
• Since 1981 Missouri City has been a zoned city. The means the placement of buildings is regulated specifically around community-living buildings. Apartments and condominium are a rare find because of this zoning ordinance.
• In the 1980s Missouri City became home to television and radio station farms.
• Since 1926 Missouri City has been the first city to use natural gas. Both natural gas and oil were discovered nearby in the 1920s and triggered a boomtown as many came to the area to seek their fortunes.
• In 1865, what is now known as Freedom Tree Park, was the site where Ed Gibbs told the slaves of Palmer Plantation, they were now free.
• In 1853, Missouri City became a stop on the first railroad in Texas — the BBB & C (Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, & Colorado Railway).
